WuXi AppTec HitS Scientist Mentors the Next Generation of STEM Professionals

On February 23, 2022, WuXi AppTec HitS was invited to participate in MassBay’s STEM(science, technology, engineering and math) Mentor Program (SMP). Dr. Yanchong Huangfu (Benjamin), a senior scientist in WuXi AppTec HitS, has assumed the role of mentoring STEM students in the Boston area, contributing to their transition to academic research or industries.

MassBay’s SMP is organized by Massachusetts Bay Community College and ABI-Lab. SMP aims to nurture STEM students' academic success and to promote their academic and career aspirations. Providing supportive mentoring relationships is one of the most important aspects of this program.

Withoutstanding achievement and superior performance in the areas of leadership, technological innovation and business development in pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device,WuXi AppTec was recognized by SMP and selected as a STEM partner. As a member of the WuXi AppTec HitS Boston Innovation Center, Benjamin joined the STEM program in October 2021 as a mentor and opened opportunities forSTEM students to tour labs, ask questions, and network with leading industry professionals.

Dr. Yanchong Huangfu (Benjamin) joined WuXi AppTec HitS at Boston in August 2019.

Thanks to WuXi AppTec HitS’ one-stop drug discovery platform, complete industry chains and scientific resources, Benjamin was able toprovide academic and career-related support for students. He has assisted them with frontier lectures,internship programsand project participation related to their backgrounds, personal interests and career planning.For instance, WuXi AppTec HitS has provided students experience in the area of DNA-Encoded Library technology which exposes students to the development of DNA-compatible chemical reactions (Chemistry), the preparation of target proteins and affinity selection (Biology), Next-Generation Sequencing (Informatics) and virtual screening.Benjaminencourages students to gain knowledge and skills outside of their typical subjects, helping to gain self-advocacy skills and confidence to be successful in a STEM field.
